University of Surrey

One of the UK’s top professional, scientific and technological universities

The University of Surrey is one of the UK’s top professional, scientific and technological universities in the UK.

Named as The Times and Sunday Times University of the Year 2016, it has a world-class profile and a leading reputation in teaching and research. It is ranked 10th in both the Times Higher Education Table of Tables 2017 and the Guardian University Guide 2018.

The University was established in 1966 with the grant of its Royal Charter, but its roots go back to a late 19th-century concern to provide greater access to further and higher education for those less well off in London.

Surrey has a range of leading facilities and resources that allow it to conduct world-class research in a broad array of fields.  These include those housed at Surrey Research Park, a major centre of excellence in technology, science, health and engineering and home to over 110 companies ranging from start-ups through to HQs of technology companies. The University’s 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) is now the largest UK academic research centre dedicated to the development of the next generation of mobile and wireless communications, working with key industry partners (including Huawei and Fujitsu, also located in the Thames Valley) to achieve this. The Surrey Space Centre is the world’s leading research centre for small, low-cost space missions.

The University’s School of Veterinary Medicine, which was opened in October 2015, is the newest veterinary school in the UK.   Whilst embracing the traditional values of professionalism, scientific curiosity and clinical excellence, they are also developing a school with broad horizons. Its extensive network of partners in clinical practice, industry and research opens up unique learning opportunities for students and for industry-relevant research. Its global outlook ensures an international perspective on all aspects of veterinary science.
