Shinfield Studios’ proposal for a new four stage temporary film studio and associated workshops at the Thames Valley Science Park (TVSP) has been approved by Wokingham Borough Council on 24th March 2021.

The University of Reading (UoR) has entered into an agreement with affiliates of Commonwealth Real Estate LP, a film studios investor based in Los Angeles, to back the first part of Shinfield Studios and develop a major film studios and creative media campus.

The new studios represent a significant investment in the British film and creative industries and are expected to create £500m of annual inward investment to the UK.

The approval is a major boost for delivering a new ‘Cine Valley’ to foster a new film and TV ecosystem. The studios and associated creative and digital hub will provide new opportunities for people and businesses in the region, as well as for young people from a wide range of backgrounds, including students and graduates of the UoR, looking for opportunities in the growing creative and entertainment industries.

Samantha Foley, Chief Financial Officer of the UoR said: “We are delighted that these Studios have been approved, and it will be great to see films emerging onto the international stage from right here on our doorstep.  This is just the beginning, as the proposals by Shinfield Studios for the rest of their site at TVSP present an exciting opportunity for Shinfield, Wokingham and the UK.”

Paul Britton, CEO of Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce said:Another great statement on the contribution the UK’s true turbo-economy – the Thames Valley – is making to the success of UK plc and the creative industries sector. Evidence of the compelling attraction of the region to investors from the USA, and across the globe, and an excellent springboard to our recovery, post COVID-19 and EU exit”.

Nick Smith, Joint Managing Director of Shinfield Studios said: “This is great news. We are delighted (to be able to) begin our journey to create a state of the art, 21st century film and television production complex at the TVSP”.
