Rutherford Cancer Centre in Reading meets growing demand for advanced cancer care

13:04 28 August in Berkshire, Life Sciences & Healthcare, News

The Rutherford Cancer Centre Thames Valley has announced the opening of its new proton beam therapy suite for the beginning of September, in order to meet the growing demand for the pioneering treatment. The centre officially opened last year and was providing conventional care; however, the new suite offers a high energy proton beam therapy to patients as part of a wider range of therapies, including: radio-, chemo-, immuno-, biological-, hormone-, CT (computerised tomography) scanner and MRI (magnetic resource imaging) scanner.

“Bringing precision radiotherapy to the most populous region of the UK for the first time will have a major impact on patient outcomes and help transform cancer care nationally. Demand for advanced cancer treatments such as proton beam therapy will continue to grow, and we are certain that the Thames Valley centre will go a long way in enabling patients to receive the treatments they need much closer to home.”

Laura Geer, Centre Manager of Rutherford Cancer Centre Thames Valley

“We are delighted to open our third Rutherford Cancer Centre in Reading and bring the most advanced cancer care to those in the South East. It is gratifying to see the speed at which each centre has been established, and our ultimate aim is to have a Rutherford Cancer Centre within 90 minutes of 75% of the UK population within the next three years.”

Mike Moran, CEO of Proton Partners International

The facility, based in Reading, will be the first of its calibre in the South East and is due to play a crucial role in progressing medication throughout the region. The network of Rutherford Cancer Centres has transformed the landscape for innovative care in the UK and will continue to do so. This type of radiotherapy delivers heavily charged protons in a more targeted manner to reduce damage to peripheral tissue and organs, the accuracy of this significantly reducing the risk of side effects.

“Reading is not only a dynamic city with a thriving healthcare and biotech scene, but one which is excellently located for patients to travel from Heathrow or other travel hubs. We see our Thames Valley centre as a gateway to proton beam therapy treatment, both for the UK as a whole and for patients from abroad.”

Mike Moran, CEO of Proton Partners International

“It’s excellent to see the expansion of The Rutherford Cancer Centre that will provide crucial care for cancer patients using proton beam therapy. The new suite at Reading, located firmly within the wider ‘golden triangle’ of UK life science activity, will pave the way for other centres around the UK as they continue to produce innovative and pioneering care.”
