Skills - Develop skills for global competiveness

Skilled and motivated people drive forward successful businesses. The Thames Valley's large, skilled and productive workforce is a key factor in the success of the region's economy. In an increasingly competitive global economy, Thames Valley businesses need to have an adaptable skills base that can meet changing demands.

Building on the strength and stability of the UK economy, the government's 2006 report - the Leitch Review of Skills - set out a compelling vision for 2020 - to make the UK a world leader in skills. The report highlighted the need for "economically valuable skills delivered through a demand-led approach, facilitated by a new culture of learning."It encouraged the government, employers and individuals to engage and invest more in skills development.

The Berkshire Skills Alliance - a publicly funded initiative managed by TVEP - is already making progress towards this vision. It unites employers, business bodies and public sector organisations behind the vision to enhance the skills of the region's workforce so that employers can access the skills they need and employees can maximise their potential, opportunity and effectiveness.
