Thames Valley united on new railway schemes

Leaders of business and community groups have vowed to back a further coordinated campaign to improve Thames Valleys - despite a decision by theGovernment to curtail transport spending in the wake ofr mounting debt.
At a transport forum New Railwaqys for the Thames Valley, organised by TVEP with the support of the publicly-funded Berkshire Strategic Transport Board, business and local authority representatives argued that priority should be given to the region as one of the country's few growth areas.

Surge in interest from foreign companies

A significant number of potential new investors have been checking out the prospects of setting up in the Thames Valley, a well attended economic outlook breakast organised by TVEP was told on May 21.

Colin Chapman, vice president of the Strategic Forecasting Group, who chaired the event held at Reading’s brand new Hilton Hotel, said that the inward investment team of TVEP had provided the leaders of five separate overseas companies with a tour of the region in five successive business days.

The business, local authority and community delegates at the breakfast were given a private briefing on the outlook for the economy by Chris Piper, the Bank of England’s agent for south central England. For the latest Bank report, click here.

The event was rounded off by a detailed insight into how internet sales are penetrating some sectors of retail trade in the High Street. Brian McBride, managing direcfor Amazon UK, said there were now one and a half billion people using the intertnet, with 250 million, or 62 per cent of the populace, in Europe alone. Thames Valley infrastructure Transport Thames Valley
Plans to electrify the Great Western main line from Paddington through Slough and Reading to Bristol and South Wales are now on the drawing board - a move that will make it possible to provide a direct link through to Heathrow.
