Just less than a year after Prime Minister David Cameron announced a national £200m+ technology and innovation centre programme to transform the UK’s capability for innovation, the Harwell Oxford science and innovation campus has been selected as one of only a handful of world-class centres of excellence in Britain.
The aptly named “Satellite Applications Catapult centre” will give Britain’s space sector a significant competitive advantage over our European neighbours, helping home grown and foreign owned inward investors to commercialise the outputs of Oxfordshire’s world-class research base.
Harwell Oxford, already home to a significant space related technology cluster, is centred around the magnificent Diamond Light Source facility. Here electrons are sent hurtling through space at the speed of light, a facility used by thousands of scientists every year.
If you are in need of some inspiration to think big today check out the scientists, engineers and users of the Diamond synchrotron who share why they do what they do and what makes science and the facility so important to them through the link here “We are all scientists”
Britain waits in eager anticipation for the new Catapult centre which is expected to be operational in the Autumn of 2012. Here new satellite-based applications and services will be developed and build further on the capabilities of a location already hugely regarded for collaboration between the brightest minds in research, business and international partners.
