Thames Valley based Pinewood Studio Group’s Andrew M Smith appointed to the Board of the British Film Institute

The Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Matthew Hancock, has appointed Andrew M. Smith, Corporate Affairs Director, Pinewood Studios Group, Buckinghamshire as one of four new appointments to the Board of the British Film Institute.   He will serve a four-year term.

On his appointment, Andrew M Smith commented:

It’s a great honour to be appointed to the post of Governor of the British Film Institute, and organisation with a proven track-record supporting the UK film industry now stretching back 85 years. For me it is an especially interesting time to take on this role and support the Institute deliver its new 5-Yr Business Plan, published only last year (2017), and a wider creative industry worth in excess of £92 billion in GVA (gross value add) terms; employing around 2 million people nationwide.

As Corporate Affairs Director, Pinewood Studios Group (located at the heart of the UK film industry in Buckinghamshire), I will be pleased to represent the Thames Valley’s truly global film and creative industries sector.  The Thames Valley is rightly proud of our illustrious history and association with film – one of the UK’s most creative, dynamic and fast-moving industries. We are also a global leader in developing, and investing in, next generation technology. This will keep the Thames Valley and the UK at the forefront of the film industry”.

Paul Britton, Chief Executive of Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce said:

This is great for Andrew and Pinewood, tremendous for the Thames Valley and brilliant for the BFI.  The creative industries sector (of which film is an integral component) is one of the Thames Valley region’s most economically important sectors, and Pinewood Studios one of our greatest assets. The Studios are home to some of the most enduring screen classics, from James Bond, Star Wars and the Marvel Universe, to a host of award-winning indie productions, including its iconic 007 Stage.  We congratulate Andrew on his appointment and look forward to his contribution to the BFI, and his continued dedication representing the UK film industry and the Thames Valley”.

We work alongside the Department for International Trade (DIT), the region’s Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), Local Authorities and professional service providers to support foreign direct investment (FDI) into the Thames Valley.

For the 2017/18 financial year, we are proud to report that the Thames Valley has retained its status as the number one region in the UK, outside of London, for attracting FDI. 191 FDI projects were recorded as entering the region, with a high proportion of these investors strongly supported by the Chamber.
